Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson presented 10 inaugural Sustainability Achievement Awards to county departments and agencies on Tuesday, recognizing their efforts in energy conservation and environmental protection. The ceremony marked not a beginning but formal acknowledgment of ongoing work, as Wilson stressed. She also announced Green Vision, a new initiative to coordinate sustainability across the county amid Utah's water scarcity and air quality challenges.
Recognizing Proven Environmental Commitments
Wilson made clear that sustainability efforts predate the awards. "It's not the first time Salt Lake County has done work in this space. It's the first time we've said 'thank you,'" she told attendees at the Salt Lake County Council Chambers. This recognition targets actions that save taxpayer money while addressing Utah's arid conditions, including a shrinking Great Salt Lake and persistent air pollution. Green Vision aims to instill these values countywide, with a full launch set for 2026.
Water Conservation Leads Collaborative Efforts
The Achievement in Land award went to six agencies, including the Sheriff's Office, Mountain America Expo Center, and Animal Services, for the "Flip the Strip" initiative. They replaced 160,930 square feet of turf with water-efficient landscaping, cutting water use and bolstering drought resilience. Wilson highlighted public scrutiny over visible waste, like nighttime sprinklers or gutter pooling. "If you're going to talk the talk, walk the walk," she said, underscoring how such projects demonstrate accountability in a state where water shortages threaten ecosystems and communities.
Diverse Wins Across Air, Water, Energy, and Waste
Other honorees showed sustainability's broad reach. Salt Lake County Arts and Culture earned Achievement in Water for a Great Salt Lake-themed exhibit that spotlights the lake's cultural and ecological importance. The Health Department's Vehicle Repair and Replacement Assistance Program won Achievement in Air by helping low-income residents switch to cleaner vehicles. The Daybreak Branch of the county library claimed Achievement in Energy as Utah's first net-zero building, powered by 512 solar panels generating 102% of its needs and geothermal systems under the parking lot to cut emissions.
The Salt Palace Convention Center received Achievement in Waste and Recycling for diverting 33.57% of its 2025 waste through recycling, composting, and reuse. These examples reveal how everyday operations—from libraries to convention centers—can drive measurable environmental gains, connecting local actions to regional crises like lake desiccation and inversion-trapped pollutants.
